Girls basketball remains undefeated after 48-30 win over Blair

In a crucial 4A South match up, the girls basketball team defeated the 6-4 Blair Blazers 48-30, improving their undefeated record to 9-0 this season.

“The game was very competitive,” captain forward Alison Poffley said. “Blair really came out ready to play and gave it their all.”

Guard Abby Meyers again had a game-high 17 points, followed by captain guard Nicole Fleck, who added nine points on three three-pointers. Forward Betsy Knox and guard Hannah Niles also had six points each in the win.

The Vikings started the game on a 5-0 run, but the Blazers turned the game around and finished the first quarter on an 11-4 run, putting them in the lead 11-9. Although the Vikings forced many Blazer turnovers in the first quarter, they were unable to capitalize and put many points on the board.

After a quick scare during the first quarter, the Vikings surged forward and outscored the Blazers 15-9 in both the second and third quarters, bringing their lead to fourteen and sealing the win.

“When we were trailing, I think what helped us a lot was being able to look back on similar situations where we came out victorious,” Poffley said. “Having played so many games together, we have encountered many tough situations and have learned to mentally pull through. It just takes a few baskets to get the momentum back.”

The Vikings were effective in swinging the ball around on offense, but struggled with lackluster shooting percentage, Poffley said. She believes that by adjusting their game to defend hard screens and getting their hands up before shots went up helped the team get back in the game and eventually come out with a win.

The girls look to keep their undefeated season alive when they host the dominant and also undefeated 11-0 Paint Branch Panthers Tuesday.
