Martin Galvin, a poet and Whitman teaching alum, read his poetry compilations “Wild Card” and “Sounding the Atlantic” in the media center Nov. 9 as the second speaker in a series of literary discussions. Galvin used to be the English resource teacher at Whitman.
One of the poems he read, “Teacher’s Pet,” drew from his experience at Whitman.
“These women come in here, I swear, like wild goats and tell us how to teach their kids,” he wrote. “I’d like to see those mothers lean down to their children and guide their hands when they stink like a stuck toilet, nothing less.”
His poetry collection won the 1989 Columbia Prize for Poetry.
