Fenton wins, three other Vikings place in wrestling counties

The wrestling team carried its regular-season dominance into the postseason Saturday: four wrestlers placed at the county tournament including Mitch Fenton, who took first in the 152lb division.

132lb James Bamberger and 182lb Ezra Alexander finished fourth in their brackets, and 170lb Marcos Solloso placed second.

Bamberger opened with a pin and a major decision in his first two matches but lost the following two on decisions. Similarly, Alexander pinned his first two opponents but dropped his last two matches. Alexander’s final match ended in a nail-biting one-point decision in the final 10 seconds.

Solloso’s first two matches resulted in first- and second-period pins respectively. He picked up his third match on a decision to advance to the finals, which he lost on a fall.

Most notably, Fenton maintained his perfect record this season with a 4–0 performance, earning him first place. He won on two pins, a major decision and a decision.

All four wrestlers advanced to Regions due to their results, and four other Vikings—113lb Clark Boinis, 145lb Hamoon Shokoohinia, 195lb John Luke Iglesias and 220lb Jacob Winch— qualified based on merit as well.

While the Vikes put on an impressive showing at Counties, they have to make some improvements in order to excel at upcoming tournaments, Bamberger said.

“Personally, I need to tighten things up for Regions and I’m sure that my teammates feel the same way,” he said. “[Regions] means a lot more since it determines who goes to the state tournament.”

The Vikes will compete at Regionals on Friday and Saturday at Sherwood High School.
