The boys basketball team’s record fell to 9–8 Tuesday night after a 58–57 loss to the 10–6 Churchill Bulldogs.
The Vikings came into Tuesday’s match-up on a five-game win streak. They were strong out of the gate and battled for the lead until the end.
“It was close the entire game, and especially in the fourth quarter,” forward CK Koumbourlis said. “We were basically just trading baskets.”
In the final seconds of the game, with the Vikings ahead by one, a Churchill player was fouled and made both ensuing free throws. The Vikings were unable to score on their final possession, securing a 58–57 Bulldogs victory.
“The last few minutes were wild,” forward Sam Kapner said. “Their forward, Bradley Leventhal, was knocking down shots and getting to the basket left and right. Shaq and Max were also playing great for us, but Churchill’s forwards just wouldn’t miss a shot.”
The Viking defense struggled to contain Churchill’s aggressive offense throughout the game.
“We didn’t handle their perimeter offense very well,” Kapner said. “We played a lot of man to man defense, but eventually changed to a 3–2 by the end of the game. In the 3–2 we handled their guards a lot better but had trouble boxing out.”
The Vikings only have four games remaining in the regular season and next host the 14–2 Richard Montgomery Rockets 7:15 Friday evening.
