The hockey team (4–3–2) returned to the ice Friday night, starting off the year with a 7–1 victory over Richard Montgomery.
The team had previously faced the Rockets (0–8) in December, where they had an impressive 9–0 shutout.
The game got off to a slow start for the Vikes, who scored only once in the first period against the Rockets’ first-time goalie, who was filling in as a result of the suspension of their usual goalkeeper.
“The first period we really were not mentally prepared,” goalie Brendan Daly said. “I think a lot of our players took the challenge lightly because the last time we played them we scored six in the first, so going into the second a change had to be made, and our coaching staff made sure of that.”
After that, the team returned to its usual strength, scoring three goals while only allowing one during the second period, then adding another three in the third.
Although they came out on top, Daly said the team was overconfident going into the match, and afterwards felt as if they could have had a stronger game.
“We thought the game would be easy and that costed us,” Daly said. “It was also our first game since before break so we had to get the chemistry going again.”
For a rematch against rival B-CC, who they previously beat 8–6, the team travels to the Rockville Ice Arena Tuesday at 4:45.
