Whitman alumnus Daniel Milzman (’12) was sentenced in federal court Monday to one year and one day in prison for the possession of the deadly biological toxin ricin in his dorm room.
Milzman was first arrested in March when police discovered enough ricin to kill a full grown adult in his Georgetown room. He plead guilty in September to unregistered possession of a biological toxin.
It remains unclear how he intended to use the ricin. According to court documents, Milzman had told police that he had intended to use it on himself.
The judge ordered that Milzman also serve two years of probation, perform 400 hours of community service and undergo a mental health evaluation.
Milzman, 20, received the minimum penalty for the crime, which could have resulted in a quarter-million dollar fine and five year prison stint. He has already served 7 1/2 months of his sentence.
