Boys soccer continued their road to states with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory against the Walter Johnson wildcats Thursday, advancing to the regional finals.
WJ came out strong with a quick goal in the first ten minutes. They also had several near-goal misses as they worked past the Vikings defense. However, the Whitman offense quickly answered with a left-footed goal from midfielder Evan Goldsholle to tie the game.
The teams remained locked out until WJ scored again in the final minutes of the half.
The second half was Whitman’s game. Midfielder Aaron Tanenbaum scored quickly on a breakaway to tie the game 2-2. Tanenbaum then scored in quick succession to give the Vikes their first lead of the game.
Midfielder and captain Jeff Rosenberg extended Whitman’s lead with a goal 15 minutes before the closing whistle.
Goldsholle says the team’s playoff success can be attributed to the difficult schedule they had this year.
“We’ve had the chance to play against some very strong teams in the [regular] season which has prepared us,” he said.
The Vikings will play in the regional championship Tuesday against Gaithersburg at Wootton High School.
