The 4-2 girls basketball team battled Churchill in a hard-fought game before finally putting away the Bulldogs in the second half and winning 61-50, Dec. 20.
The girls started off hot in the first quarter, taking an early lead, but Churchill battled back and cut the Vikes lead to only two at halftime.
At the start of the second half, however, the girls came out and extended their lead quickly, outscoring the Bulldogs by seven in the third quarter and taking a 45-36 lead into the fourth and eventually prevailing, 61-50.
“We talked [at halftime] about slowing ourselves down and playing the game at our speed,” forward Avery Witt said. “We also just got really fired up and decided that they shouldn’t have any hope.”
The scoring was led by guard Marie Hatch and Witt who each had 13 points. Point guards Maddie Cannon and Nicole Fleck were also able to add nine points each to give the Vikes a balanced scoring attack against the tough Churchill defense.
The girls will now take on rivals Walter Johnson and B-CC at home Jan. 3 and 6.
