The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 24 Whitman seniors as semifinalists, the third highest number among Maryland schools.
Students are eligible for the scholarship if they take the PSAT in the fall of their junior year and score in the top half percent of their state. To qualify, this year students in Maryland had to score 220 or higher on the PSAT, which is out of 240.
Semifinalists can apply to be National Merit finalists by sending the College Board an essay similar to the Common Application essay and information about their GPA and extracurricular activities.
Whitman also had one semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition for African American students.
