The Whitman Sources of Strength Club will be offering several stress-reducing activities during the hour long break between exam periods June 14-16, hoping to improve students’ mental health and promote positivity throughout finals week.
Activities include movie/TV shows in the auditorium, yoga in the wrestling room, dogs in the auditorium foyer, dodgeball in the gym and coloring in the cafeteria.
The club has already arranged two big campaigns this year —the banner of names of adults whom students trusted and the positive message campaign— and according to club sponsor Rebecca Leef, wants to end the year with another activity geared towards helping students.
The break between exams was recently extended from one half hour to one hour. After realizing that there was nothing to do in that lengthy break between exams, the club brainstormed ideas to change the stressful atmosphere, Leef said.
“For a lot of other students, it was a long period of time for them to sit and stress about their upcoming exams and they weren’t necessarily using the time to study,” she said.
Leef said she feels that these activities will help students de-stress and lessen the burden of the day. She also hopes for a positive reaction to the event so that it can be implemented again sometime next year.
Junior Annie Waye said that she appreciates the club and event’s purpose, and believes that it will have a positive impact on students.
“I think it’s important to promote anti-stress and send an understanding message about how, while exams can put a lot of pressure on students, not everything has to be stressful,” Waye said. “I think that students with two exams on a particular day will really enjoy the anti-stress activities. The break in between is pretty long and having the option to do something fun with friends is great.”
