Concerned community members meet to discuss dangerous intersection

Community members discussed the four concept designs proposals for the River Road/Braeburn Parkway intersection, where 3 members of a Whitman family were killed earlier this year, in the Whitman auditorium June 7.

The meeting hoped to have community members reach a consensus on choosing one of the four construction plans proposed by the State Highway Association (SHA). Vice President of the Bannockburn Civic Association and concerned local resident, Richard Boltuck facilitated the discussion, presenting and discussing the concept diagrams that are currently under consideration.

Currently the intersection doesn’t merit the SHA’s criteria for obtaining a traffic signal, Boltuck said.

“The community has a degree of wisdom about the dangers of it that really go beyond anything you could obtain by ticking a certain number of boxes,” Boltuck said.

A majority of those who attended the meeting are in favor of placing a light at the intersection, including community member Beth Rogers. Rogers’ daughter attended Whitman, and had to cross the busy intersection to get to and from school without a light or crosswalk.

“I’m really delighted that we have what appears to be consensus about getting a traffic light at River and Pyle,” Rogers said. “It’s the only logical solution.”
