Whitmaniacs to coordinate Guy Auction

The Whitmaniacs will coordinate this year’s Guy Auction after the SGA pulled back multiple annual LLS events.

“Guy Auction is back!! Whitmaniacs have taken over this event and it will be happening February 10th!” student coordinator Hannah Ginsky posted in the Whitmaniac’s Facebook group Dec 15.

In order to focus their attention on Every 15 Minutes, a drunk driving awareness event, Leadership canceled Guy Auction in November. The Whitmaniacs, Whitman’s spirit club, brought it back due to popular demand.

“It’s not that Leadership doesn’t have enough money to do it or don’t like the event,” Leadership officer and Whitmaniacs member Keara Sullivan said. “It’s that we don’t have time because we would need people from Leadership there and we just don’t have the free time to do that with all that is going on.”

As Leadership shifts their focus away from LLS for the event Every 15 Minutes, student body president Selvi Ulusan urged clubs to take on LLS month activities in her recent State of Whitman Address.

Leadership tries to do Every 15 Minutes every four years so each student at Whitman has a chance to experience the event Leadership member Sophia Tompkins said.

When Leadership announced that Guy Auction had been canceled, many students were disappointed they couldn’t participate in or watch the event.

“I was really bummed when it was canceled,” junior Ferzam Mohammad said. “It’s something that a lot of guys are interested in doing.”

Reactions like Mohammad’s, as well as the minimal work associated with the event, motivated the Whitmaniacs.

“I realized it was a relatively low-key event to run, so we decided to take it on” Sullivan said.

Senior Hannah Ginsky and Sullivan are the student coordinators in charge of the event along with teacher sponsor Danielle Fus. The event is open to junior and senior boys only.

“Its back by popular demand, and there should be some pretty spicy stuff,” Sullivan said. “It’s gonna be wild this year.”
