The SGA announced today that it will cancel certain LLS month events to hold the program “Every 15 Minutes” in March.
Class delegates delivered the news during third period: Guy Auction will not happen this year, though bRAVE still will. The SGA also told delegates that the status of other events is unclear.
“Every 15 Minutes is a two-day drunk driving awareness program that involves student actors, a mock car crash and an assembly,” Leadership member Keara Sullivan said.
According to the Every 15 Minutes website, the national program is designed to “dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol and texting while driving”.
In the past, Every 15 Minutes was powerful for students, art teacher Nancy Mornini said.
Whitman holds the event every four years to ensure that each class gets to experience it once. The event was supposed to happen last year, but the school opted out because the schedule was too busy during LLS month, principal Alan Goodwin explained.
“The SGA works very hard to put on a variety of programs during the school year,” Goodwin said. “One of their most intensive months is February because of the Leukemia Drive, but it’s time for our school to do the Every 15 Minutes program, and for the SGA to try to do them both and do them well is just a tremendous amount of work.”
By reducing the number of LLS events, Whitman will most likely lose its three-year standing title of top fundraising school in the country.
