Baseball rides five-run sixth inning to 5–2 victory over Wootton

The baseball team rallied in the sixth inning to top the Wootton Patriots 5–2 Wednesday, improving their record to 6–5.

There was little action through the first four innings, with the game’s only score coming on a Patriots solo home run.

However, the Vikings built momentum in the fifth inning by turning a crucial double play that prevented the Patriots from extending their 1–0 lead.

In the sixth inning, following a 45-minute rain delay, the Vikes came through with an offensive outburst, scoring all five of their runs for the game.

Outfielder Danny Mills, third baseman Alex Clark, outfielder Andrew Cashmere and shortstop Ian Atkinson each drove in a run, and Ben Rosenblatt capped off the scoring with an RBI single.

Rosenblatt said the team was able to take advantage of the Patriots’ pitching change, and their own solid batting, to take the commanding lead.

“They threw in a different pitcher, and that was a momentum changer,” he said. “We [also] capitalized on on our baserunners and stepped up big when hits were needed.”

The Patriots cut the lead to three runs with another home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was not enough to overcome the Vikes’ tremendous offensive outbreak.

The Vikings will look to carry over their offensive success when they face Northwest Thursday.
