The boys volleyball team secured their first win in over three years Monday, beating the Springbrook Blue Devils 3–1 at home.
Not only did the game mark the first time the team has won a game in recent years, but it was also the first time this season that the Vikes were able to win a set.
“It was exhilarating, because I think that it was a collective effort and that just made it all more worthwhile,” outside hitter Harrison Jacobs said.
All four sets were evenly matched, as neither team could hold more than a four-point lead. The Vikes’ offensive lineup showed definite improvement compared to previous games, with many more effective hits than before.
The boys won the first and second sets 25–21, after two notable saves off of feet to keep the ball in play.
The Devils made a small comeback during the third set and despite Whitman’s tough offense, the boys were unable to match the score. Towards the end of the set, many of the Viking’s sets came extremely close to the net, making it difficult to successfully spike the ball, and the Devils prevailed 25–20.
The boys again triumphed in the fourth set, showing their skill on defense as well as on offense. Numerous blocks and dives helped the team to stay ahead, and they won 25–20.
The Vikes face the Wootton Patriots at home Wednesday at 5:15, where they hope to improve their record to 2–7.
