Russian president Vladimir Putin announces ceasefire in Ukraine
After extensive peace talks with Ukraine and Western diplomats, Putin announced Feb. 12 that he would withdraw heavy weapons from Ukraine and create a security zone in the East. He also called on Ukraine to take control of its borders and to institute constitutional reforms to decentralize eastern regions. Click here to read more about the ceasefire.
“Daily Show” anchor Jon Stewart signs off after 16 years
Stewart announced his departure on Tuesday’s show, following in the footsteps of sister show “The Colbert Report,” which ended less than two months ago. Stewart says he doesn’t have any specific plans for what his next project will be, and Comedy Central has yet to announce his successor. Click here to read more about the 20-time Emmy winner.
Obama requests three-year authorization of military operations against the Islamic State
President Barack Obama formally requested Congressional authorization of “enduring offensive combat operations” against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Troop mobility on the ground is limited, and the Senate requires that the Obama administration update Congress every 60 days about its operations.
