The girls varsity basketball team routed the 1-2 Wootton Patriots 56-41 Monday, extending their winning streak to four games and improving to 4-0 on the season.
“We pulled out a win even though it wasn’t our best performance,” forward and captain Alison Poffley said. “We had sparks where we played well and kept us going.”
Guard Abby Meyers scored a game-high 19 points and went 6-6 from the free throw line. Guard Hannah Niles scored 12 points, followed by forward Marie Hatch and guard Nicole Fleck who each registered 11 points. These four girls combined to score 53 of the team’s 56 points.
The end of the first quarter resulted in a slim 11-10 lead for Whitman, but in the second and third quarters, the Vikings outscored the Patriots 18-4 and 14-8, respectively, putting the team ahead for good.
Notably, the Vikings managed to hold the Patriots to only 24% shooting and had lockdown defense against their opponent’s three star guards, helping to secure the Vikings’ fourth straight win.
“We were able to limit their good shooters to make a low percentage of shots which really helped,” Poffley said.
The girls will look to advance to 5-0 when they host the 0-3 Northwest Jaguars Wednesday in their home opener.
“It’s going to be great to finally play at home,” Poffley said. “It will be fun to have more fans and just play on a court that we are all more used to.”
