Boys and Girls Soccer Preview

The girls and boys soccer teams hope to complete the final leg of their road to states tomorrow and reach the state semifinals.

The boys take on the Gaithersburg Trojans at 5 p.m. and the girls play the Northwest Jaguars at 7 p.m. in a doubleheader at Wootton.

Boys soccer dismantled Gaithersburg during the regular season, beating them 5-1 with striker Davey Mason and forward Daniel Kjartansson leading the charge, with two goals each.

Although the boys breezed past the Trojans in the regular season, they will have a tougher battle this time around as many of Gaithersburg’s key players sat out the regular season game.

“Gaithersburg is going to be much different from when we played them in the regular season,” midfielder Jeff Rosenberg said. “We can’t underestimate them and we have to make sure that we know where their dangerous players are at all times. We’re going to have to set the tone early.”

The Vikes will look to pressure Gaithersburg’s star player, Max Boimov, and force him into difficult situations, Rosenberg said.

The Lady Vikes kick off against Northwest after the boys game. The girls defeated the Jaguars 1-0 in their season opener, and despite the close score, the girls dominated the game with several scoring opportunities.

Since the end of the regular season, the girls have amped up their focus and work to identify a new game plan for each upcoming game.

“Since it’s playoffs, we all have to focus more and really work at each practice because every time there’s a chance that it could be our last one, and bad practices lead to bad games,” midfielder Clare Severe said. “We’re trying to come out with a ton of intensity and score early so they put their heads down, because the longer we let them stay in the game the more of a chance there is that they will be able to get one and beat us.”

The Lady Jaguars are an athletic team, with speed all over the field, Severe said.

The team has missed midfielder Maddie Parker and defender Kate Morrison, both starters, for a large portion of the season due to injuries. They have been cleared to play in tomorrow’s game.

“Parker brings so much intensity to the game and it’s good to have her back in the midfield because she distributes the ball really well and creates opportunities,” Severe said. “Morrison is our center back so she makes tackles and shuts people down.”

Both the boys and girls are taking it one game at a time and not thinking about their ultimate goal of winning the state title.

“We’re focused on getting this win on Tuesday and going from there,” Rosenberg said.
