Boys soccer advances in playoffs with 2-0 win over B-CC

Boys soccer advanced to the next round of the playoffs with a decisive 2-0 victory over the cross town rival B-CC Barons Tuesday. The game was not only an important win, but was also revenge for the Vikes 2-1 loss to the Barons in the regular season.

The Vikings were challenged before the game even started with ace goalie and captain Ian Atkinson suspended after receiving a red card in the previous game. However, backup Jesse Markowitz was rock solid all game ending the night with 5 saves.

Whitman’s offense struck first with an early goal from midfielder Aaron Tanenbaum. The offense never let up, dominating for the rest of the game and creating many scoring opportunities. Although there were several near misses off the crossbar, the first half ended with Whitman up 1-0.

The offense kept control through the second half and quickly struck again when forward Andreas Djurhuus scored on a breakaway. From there, the Vikings used their superior speed and aggressiveness to stall the Barons counterattack, leaving the final score at 2-0.

Forward Davey Mason had a phenomenal game producing several shots on goal, keeping the ball in the offense’s hands. Mason said the team’s focus moving forward is to advance at all costs.

“Our mindset is to do whatever it takes to win,” he said.
