There has been a noticeable spike in absences the last two weeks because of a viral respiratory illness.
Both students and teachers have complained of cold-like symptoms including throat aches, headaches and clogged sinuses.
“The major thing was the coughing,” said secretary Donna Gardiner, who missed school because of the illness.
“Last week, most kids that signed out, they signed out sick,” attendance secretary June Williams said.
The absences continued into this week, but they seem to be dying down. 63 students were absent Monday and 31 students missed school Tuesday, Williams said.
Gardiner said she didn’t have too much trouble making up for missed days.
“If one person is out then the rest of the office pitches in so they’re not inundated when they get back,” she said.
