Varsity boys lacrosse fell to the Churchill Bulldogs 9-8 in overtime, April 13, dropping its record to 3-1.

Churchill started strong and took early command of the game. The bulldogs scored the first three goals and dominated possession throughout the first quarter. However, the Vikes put up their first goal with two minutes left in the first with a goal from attacker Pat Slawta, who cut across the goal, received the ball and finished strong.

Churchill added three more goals in the second quarter and continued to control the tempo of the game. Slawta scored again in the second, this time with an unassisted shot that flew just past the reach of the Bulldog goalie.

The Vikes faced a four goal deficit going into the second half, but caught up with Churchill in the third quarter. Slawta scored both of Whitman’s goals in the third quarter, one unassisted and one from midfielder Ross Koehn.

The boys went into the fourth quarter down two, but quickly got back into the game. Attacker Trevor Hains scored on an open shot at goal just three minutes into the quarter, and Koehn scored just two minutes later to tie the game at six.

Only ten seconds after the game tying goal, midfielder Alex Hysong ripped a shot from the center of the field and found the back of the net to put the Vikings up with six minutes left in regulation.

However, the Bulldogs struck back only thirty seconds later with a cleanup goal, knotting the game at seven and one minute later, Slawta scored his fifth goal of the night, assisted by midfielder Larry Kline, and put the Vikes up one with four minutes left.

Just as the game seemed over, the Bulldogs tied it with just thirty nine seconds left on the clock. The Vikings could not get a good shot off at the end and the game went into overtime where Churchill controlled possession throughout the period and ended the game with two minutes left on a close range shot.

Although the two teams will not meet again during the regular season, they will likely see each other in the playoffs.
