The wrestling team continued its phenomenal season by finishing second in the 16th annual Grapple at the Brook tournament, which took place at Glenbrook High School on Jan. 18.
The Vikings had 12 athletes place in the top six, and boasted seven wrestlers who finished in the top three in their weight classes. Mitch Fenton and Kevin Baker both finished first in their divisions, the 132- and 160-pound weight classes respectively.
Max Sessions, Will Baker, and Jack Calder all took home second place in their respective divisions as well. Whitman had no wrestlers make the finals in the 2013 tournament.
Junior Evan Smith took home sixth place in the 172-pound division despite only weighing in at 156 pounds.
“Personally, I did well, given the circumstances,” Smith said.
The second place finish continues a strong run by the Vikings.
“This team is exponentially better than last year’s,” Smith said. “Last year we came in 10th at this tournament and this year we’re undefeated and came in second.”
The team hopes to continue its hot streak in a tri-meet on Saturday against Clarksburg and North Hagerstown, the sixth-ranked team in the region.
