The undefeated wrestling team defeated the Richard Montgomery Rockets, 54-18, on Jan. 7 earning its sixth straight victory on the season.
“We did really well,” junior Kevin Cullinane said. “The meet started off a little slow but we picked up the pace to have a win by over 30 points.”
Despite this slow start, the team had an easy win with pins by Harriet Symington, Will Baker, Jack Caulder, Evan Smith, Mitch Fenton, and Kevin Baker.
The Vikes have high hopes for the remaining half of their season, seeing as they currently hold the best record they have had in several years.
The team also performed admirably at the 21st Patriotic Classic at Northern High School, Jan. 11, placing second out of 21 teams.
The varsity team, which had no competitors finish in the top six in their weight groups last year, had 10 people place on Jan. 11. Senior Stephen Sharbaugh placed first in the 113-pound weight class, earning his first career championship.
“The toughest challenge for me during the tournament was mentally preparing myself for the finals match as it was my first time,” Sharbaugh said. “I was definitely overwhelmed with excitement and it was especially special being that it is my senior year.”
Several other Vikings performed strong. Mitch Fenton took home the 132-pound class championship, and Kevin Baker, Matt McClanahan, Will Baker, Jack Calder, and Max Sessions all finished third in their respective weight classes. Harriet Symington, James Bamberger, and Jacob Cutler rounded out the ten Viking competitors who placed in the top six.
