House under construction set ablaze near Chevy Chase area

At 4:42 p.m. yesterday, firefighters received a warning to put out a three-alarm fire in Chevy Chase. The house, at 7105 45th Street, between Willow Lane and Leland Street, was ablaze for nearly two hours before the firefighters were able to fully quench the flames. No one was injured.

Smoke could be seen from various points in downtown Bethesda as well as from around the Chevy Chase neighborhood. Both Willow and Leland were closed off for multiple hours, as at least 5 fire trucks, in addition to police cars and ambulances arrived on the scene.

Firefighters from the Montgomery County Fire Dept. worked to put out hot spots and embers until 8 p.m. and continued to monitor the house to make sure it would not rekindle. By the time the fire was out, the house was completely gutted. Nothing remained except for the frame, with mounds of foam on the soaked, rubble-covered yard.

The house had been under construction, and the exposed wood beams allowed the flames to spread quickly. The fire spread to the neighbors’ roof, and completely destroyed the attic of the second house, but injured no one.
