The wrestling team received 11th place in the Maryland State Tournament this weekend.
The team was represented by six wrestlers, four of whom had received first place in their respective weight classes at Regionals. Only two, however, were able to ultimately place in the top six of their class.
Senior Eric Harder received third place in the 130 lb weight class. Harder went into the tournament with the number one seed, but then fell to Arundel wrestler Tyler Goodwin, who ended up being the weight class champion, by a fall at the 1:16 mark, placing him in the consolation bracket. He then beat his opponent 4-3.
Fellow senior Andrew Follmann entered the match with a number one seed as well, but ended with a fourth place finish in the 152 lb weight class. Follmann fell to his opponent by a major decision 12-3, but then defeated several wrestlers by scores of 10-0, 5-2 and 7-0, to face Tuscarora wrestler Austin Wenzlaff in the consolation round. He lost to Wenzlaff 10-0 by a major decision.
The Vikes are losing a majority of their starting line-up, but hope to continue Whitman’s dominant name in Montgomery County Wrestling.
