Baseball tops Walter Johnson, 5-2

The baseball team beat the 7-5 Walter Johnson Wildcats, 5-2, at home April 24, breaking its two-game losing streak and raising its record to 9-2.

Michael Flack pitched for the Vikings the entire game, and the Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning with a pair of walks. The Vikes quickly returned when Patrick Hisle and Ryan McGill took advantage of wild pitches, turning walks and steals into runs. The first inning closed at an even 2-2.

With their turn at bat, the Vikes started the fifth inning off with a pair of doubles by Drew Aherne and McGill, bringing Aherne home to put the Vikes up 3-2. McGill stole another base and was batted in by Andrew Castagnetti to bring the score up 4-2.

Wildcat batting stalled again in the sixth inning, and Michael Yang hit a single and advanced to third after the Wildcat pitcher threw an inaccurate pickoff ball. With another wild pitch that sent the Wildcat catcher scrambling, Yang came home to put the final total to 5-2.

The Vikes were relieved to break their two-game losing streak, pitcher Michael West said.

“It was good, we fixed some holes within our team but there are still many more things we need to work on,” he said. “We hope to keep working hard and improve our game.”

Next, the Vikes travel to compete against the 0-10 Wheaton Knights April 26.
