Wrestling defeats Damascus, 50-21

The varsity wrestling team defeated the Damascus Hornets, 50-21, on Jan 5, improving their record to 5-2.

The Vikes started out down 6-0, but immediately tied the match after a 5-0 win by Eric Harder. The Hornets took the lead again, however, with the score at 15-6. Mike Harder defeated his Damascus opponent 12-3 bringing the Vikes within five points, and beginning a spark for the team.

Wrestlers Andrew Follmann, Alex Hysong, Brad Taylor, Max Sessions, Josh and Ned Daryoush followed Harder’s win with six consecutive wins of their own, putting the Vikes in the lead 44-15.

The Hornets then received six points off of a 10-0 win. This, however, was not enough, with Jacob Rosenblum winning 2-0 on a takedown.

Head coach Derek Manon credit’s the team’s victory to its consistent aggressive pins.

“Our guys wrestled well last night,” Manon said.  “They were aggressive and working for pins and bonus points, and as a result got a lot of pins and a few major decisions.”

The Vikes will host the Churchill Bulldogs on Jan 12.
