Varsity Football defeated the Wootton Patriots 6-0, Oct 9, improving to 5-1 on the season.
The game started off with neither team scoring throughout the first quarter, despite countless opportunities for the Vikes. But the boys started off the second quarter strong, with running back Miles Davis leading the drive down the field, leading to a one-yard touchdown run by fullback Sassan Nejad. This was the sole score of the game, as the Vikes missed the extra point and went up 6-0.
Throughout the second half both defenses worked tirelessly and successfully shut out each other’s offenses.
All five Gazette sports writers predicted the Vikings to win, yet the game came closer than most people expected. After such a low score, many are dissatisfied with the offensive performance.
“It was not a pretty win, but it was a win,” head coach Jim Kuhn said.
Still, with so many top players injured, the fact that the Vikings have continued their winning streak is impressive. This shows, yet again, Whitman’s depth as a team.
Overall, the win holds them in their number three spot, and if they continue at this rate they should have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. Still, the game was a bit of a wake up call to the team, considering how close they came to losing to a much lower ranked opponent.
