Whitman was ranked the best public, private or magnet school in Maryland for the third consecutive year by US News and World Report and ranked 63rd nationally.
“[It’s] always exciting to receive positive press,” principal Alan Goodwin said.
US News ranks schools based on whether students are performing better than state averages, the performance of disadvantaged students, the school’s graduation rate and college readiness, according to their website.
Other MCPS schools in the rankings’ national top 500 include Churchill (94), Poolesville (107), Wooton (115), Walter Johnson (147), Richard Montgomery (216), Damascus (410), and Rockville (413).
Goodwin said that he was excited for the students and the staff, but cautioned trying to improve the school’s rank for the sake of improving the school’s ranking.
“We might be able get a higher national rank, but it may result in too much stress for our students,” Goodwin said.
