The baseball team secured an opening day victory Monday evening, shutting out the Seneca Valley Eagles 10–0.
The Vikings’ dominant defensive performance was centered around pitcher Sean Cook.
“Cook pitched a great game,” shortstop Sean Hannegan said. “We never gave them the opportunity to come back.”
Cook pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits over five innings, and striking out eight.
From the first pitch, the Seneca Valley defense struggled to contain the Vikings.
“We were able to jump out to an early lead,” Hannegan said. “We scored eight runs in the first inning behind home runs from Noah Clement and Noah Abromowitz.”
By the end of the fourth inning, the Vikes had added two more runs to expand to a 10–0 lead. At the end of the fifth inning, Whitman won by mercy rule.
The Vikings offense totaled 11 hits over just five innings. In addition to Abramowitz and Clement, the offense was lead by outfielder Eric Wayman, who went two for three with a double.
The 1–0 Vikings now prepare to take on the Poolesville Falcons at home Wednesday evening.
