James Bamberger and Mitch Fenton placed at the wrestling state championships Saturday afternoon—Bamberger took fifth in the 132lb division and Fenton finished sixth in the 152lb bracket.
170lb Marcos Solloso and 182lb Ezra Alexander also competed at states, both going 1–2.
Solloso opened his bracket with a decision but dropped his final two matches, including one to highly-ranked Ryan Shubert from Oakdale High School in quarterfinals.
Alexander was pinned in the first round, but rebounded to win his second match on a close decision. However, he lost his last round on a fall.
Fenton, who came into the tournament with a first-place finish in regions, won his first two matches on a pin and a decision, but fell in the semifinals to Dundalk’s undefeated Robert Doetsch. He also dropped his two consolation rounds in part because of a reaggravated injury.
Bamberger went 3–2, making it to quarterfinals before advancing to the fifth-place match, which he won on a decision to place.
Fenton has placed in states for the last three years, and he has competed in the tournament all four years of his career.
Though the team will graduate all four wrestlers next season, along with four other seniors, there are several talented underclassmen who will step in next year. Among them, Clark Boinis, Andrew Shiman and John Luke Iglesias will be key returners for the Vikes next season.
