Four wrestlers qualified for states at the regional championship Saturday afternoon: 136lb James Bamberger, 152lb Mitch Fenton, 170lb Marcos Solloso and 182lb Ezra Alexander.
Wrestlers needed to finish in the top four in their weight classes to advance to states. Alexander and Bamberger finished third in the brackets, Solloso finished second and Fenton won his division to stay undefeated on the season.
After dropping his opening match, Alexander pinned his next opponents to reach the third-place match, which he won on a decision. Similarly, Bamberger was pinned in his second round, but responded with two swift falls to secure a spot on the podium.
Solloso took his first match on a second-period pin, and won the second match by default after his opponent was injured. He ultimately fell in finals to Poolesville’s Justin Budd, but still wound up in second.
Solloso said that his practice and dieting routines have helped advance during the postseason, but there are still a few improvements he wants to make before states.
“ I will be working on muscle endurance and technique this week and doing my best to iron out any wrinkles in my wrestling,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fenton continued his impressive season with three consecutive pins—two in the first period and one in the second—en route to his first-place finish. After pinning two-seed Brendan Parent from Damasus in the final round, he became the first Viking wrestler to ever win four regional championships.
States will be the final tournament for all four wrestlers, who are wrapping up their senior campaigns. Solloso said he wants to take the opportunity to relish the moment.
“I am happy and proud of everything that I have accomplished,” Solloso said. “I want to look back with no regrets.”
The state championship will be held at the the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.
