Wrestling cruises in 66–12 victory over Wheaton

[score id=”48017″ align=”right”]
The wrestling team stayed perfect (8–0) Saturday, demolishing the Wheaton Knights 66–12 on senior day.

It was the largest margin of victory for a Vikings’ team since the ‘13-’14 squad toppled the Blake Bengals 70–3.

The Vikes dominated largely because of the players of honor—the seniors. Seniors went undefeated at the meet, and the only points the team surrendered were from one loss and a forfeit.

182lb Ezra Alexander and 195lb John Luke Iglesias opened the meet with two swift first-period pins, and 220lb Tony Rangel followed with a win by forfeit.

285lb Jacob Winch and 106lb Chris Habibian both pinned their opponents, and 113lb Clark Boinis won on a decision to extend the Vikings’ lead to 33–0.

After allowing a pin, the Vikes responded with a pin of its own from 126lb James Mackall and a decision by 132lb James Bamberger.

Whitman forfeited its 138lb match, but would not allow another point through the end of the meet.

145lb Hamoon Shokoohinia got a pin in the second round, 152lb Mitch Fenton and 160lb Braedan McKee won on Knights forfeits and 170lb Marcos Solloso closed the meet with a pin.

As the seniors near the end of their final season, they continue to influence underclassman wrestlers.

“I have personally learned a lot from the seniors by practicing with them and watching them,” Mackall said, “but I think their strongest influence on me has been giving me something to aspire to in my career.”

Because of the blizzard, the Vikings will compete four times in the next week, starting with a meet against the Gaithersburg Trojans Tuesday at 6:15.
