The football team was blown out Thursday night by the Damascus Hornets, falling 63–7. The loss drops their record to 2–5 on the season.
The Vikings anticipated a difficult matchup since the Hornets are undefeated thus far, said quarterback Matt Clayton.
“We just wanted to see how we stacked up against one of the big dogs in the county,” he said.
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter.
After allowing two more scores early in the second quarter, the Vikings got on the board with their lone touchdown of the game.
Clayton connected with receiver Alex Hilsenrath on a short pass, which Hilsenrath took 60 yards for the score. He finished the game with 91 receiving yards.
Despite the lack of touchdowns, Clayton said he was still impressed with aspects of the Vikes’ offense.
“We proved that we can pass the ball regardless of the team we played against,” he said.
However, the Hornets remained poised and tallied four more scores in the first half, heading into the break with a 56–7 lead.
In the third quarter, the Vikings let up the game’s final touchdown, and the fourth quarter was scoreless.
Perhaps the story of the game was the continued dominance of Hornets’ running back Jake Funk. The county’s leading rusher,a Maryland commit, scored four touchdowns in the game.
The Vikings will next face the Walter Johnson Wildcats for their homecoming game Friday at 6:30.
