The football team dropped to 1–3 Friday with a 42–7 loss to the defending state champion Northwest Jaguars.
Dominant early, the Jaguars shut out the Vikings and ended the first half with a 35–0 lead. There was a running clock for the duration of the second half.
A touchdown from receiver Alex Hilsenrath put the Vikes on the board in the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars answered with a final score of their own.
Receiver and defensive back Matt Anderson said the team anticipated a difficult game, and viewed it as a gut check on the teams capabilities.
“This game was a test for us, and Coach [Jim] Kuhn said it was a ‘no-lose situation,’” Anderson said. “We either won, or we learned our areas of strength and areas for improvement.”
Some of those strengths and weaknesses became apparent during the contest. While Anderson said the Vikings must work on missed tackles, he also said the team displayed good patience and offensive fundamentals.
“We remained disciplined and didn’t get any penalties,” he said. “We did a great job pushing the ball down field, but we just could not finish the drives and get touchdowns.”
The Vikings will host Churchill (1–3) in their next game Friday at 6:30.
