The baseball team mercy-ruled the Clarksburg Coyotes 12–2 Tuesday, finishing the season with an 11–7 record.
The Vikings scored first with two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Coyotes then responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
However, it didn’t take long for the Vikes to pull away, scoring four runs in the top of the third inning.
They added three runs in the fifth inning, and three more in the sixth. The game ended after the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.
Catcher Evan Koretsky attributed the team’s success to their poise at the plate.
“Simply put, we hit with confidence,” he said. “All the practice we’ve had really came through.”
The team was led by infielder Sean Cook, who drove in three runs, and outfielder Alex Clark, who hit his second home run in the last three games.
On the mound, Max Palermo pitched a solid three innings, Sam Berson pitched two and Cook closed the game with a scoreless sixth.
As they enter the playoffs, the Vikings hope to carry over the confidence they have built over the past few games.
“We are going to use the momentum from the big win to carry us through the first few rounds of the playoffs,” Koretsky said.
The Vikings will open the playoffs Friday at 4:30 when they host the Kennedy Cavaliers.
