The girls basketball team thrashed the crosstown rival Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons 67-26 Tuesday, improving their record to an impressive 16-0.
Guard play ruled the day for the Vikings with Abby Meyers scoring a game-high 19 points and Nicole Fleck adding 10 herself. This included five three-pointers between the two of them. Forwards Marie Hatch and Alison Poffley chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.
“We played very well as a team and our quick ball movement got us any shot we wanted,” guard Jenna Hosker said. “Our effort was really strong and that showed when we got a ton of rebounds on both ends.”
The Vikings started with energy and never looked back. They scored four seconds into the game, and then went on to outscore the Barons 11-0 after three minutes. They then extended the lead to 24-5 by the first quarter mark.
The next quarter was more of the same as Whitman led by 24 at the half.
The Vikings continued their dominance in the second half, scoring 22 consecutive points before a pair of free throws finally got B-CC on the board. The 7-9 Barons were barely able to put up a shot because of the Vikings’ hawk-like defense.
One of the many highlights of the game came with 5:20 left in the third when Hatch grabbed a rebound in air and simultaneously put the ball right back into the basket while getting fouled, leading to a three-point play.
“It’s always fun to beat a rival,” Hosker said. “Hopefully we bring this great momentum into our senior night game and the playoffs.”
The Vikings look to extend their win streak to 17 when they host the 6-10 Richard Montgomery Rockets Friday on senior night.
