The girls basketball team ended a three-game week with a dominant 51-28 win over the tough 13-4 Walter Johnson Wildcats Friday, extending their win streak to 15 games and preserving an undefeated record.
Guard Abby Meyers scored a game-high 15 points, followed by guard Hannah Niles and forward Marie Hatch with 12 and 11, respectively, in the Vikings’ second win over the Wildcats this week.
With Meyers in early foul trouble, it was up to Niles to provide a much-needed spark off the bench to cement the win in a Montgomery 4A South matchup between two powerhouses.
“It was a huge win and confidence booster for us as a team,” Meyers said. “Three tough games in one week can put a strain in your body and mind.”
After the Vikings took a 12-6 first quarter lead, the Wildcats stormed back behind well-executed pick-and-rolls and getting to the free throw line. They went on a 10-3 run, gaining a one-point lead early in the second quarter.
However, the Vikes responded with a 7-0 run and a 22-16 lead going into halftime, capped off by a Meyers three-pointer that whipped the crowd into a frenzy.
“We played together as a team,” Meyers said. “Even if WJ went on a run, we continued to keep our composure and play the Lady Vikes style of basketball.”
The Vikings came out of the locker room with added energy, extending their lead to 13. The fourth quarter began with five quick points by guard Nicole Fleck, including a key three-pointer, and the Vikings continued to pile it on, outscoring the Wildcats 16-6.
The key to the game was the Wildcats’ inability to convert free throws, going a meager 8-26 from the line.
Although the Vikings’ offense didn’t connect on every cylinder for all 32 minutes, it was their pesky defense that kept them in the game and ended up being the difference maker.
“As a team, we executed our defensive plan really well, and [Hatch and guard Nicole Fleck] had a phenomenal game guarding their point guard,” Niles said. “We were able to gain energy on the defensive end and then use it offensively.”
The Vikings’ plan is to rally off this win and continue to make a push before the playoffs in March, Niles said.
“After beating WJ, one of our biggest rivals, twice in one week feels amazing and we are going to use that confidence moving forward and going into the playoffs,” she said. “We showed a lot of mental toughness in that we were able to get through three games in one week and handle adversity really well.”
The Vikings look to maintain their dominance when they host the 7-8 Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons Tuesday.
