It was the “Abby Meyers Show” Friday night, when the girls basketball team demolished the Richard Montgomery Rockets 56-21, improving to an undefeated 8-0 on the season.
Starting guard Meyers scored a game and season-high 30 points, including three three-pointers and a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. The sophomore star has scored 56 points in the past two nights, scoring 26 points in the Vikings’ 62-33 thrashing of the B-CC Barons Thursday.
The Vikings came storming out of the gates and led 17-5 after the first quarter. The rest of the game was the same result, with the girls holding the Rockets to only five points in the entire second half.
With three players out with injuries, the Vikings had to rely on players who haven’t always seen a lot of playing time, said forward Betsy Knox, who scored 12 points.
“Other people had to step up and make plays,” she said. “We had so many people last night getting time on the floor and making good plays; I think it showed the depth of talent we have on the team.”
The Vikings’ goal going into the game was to limit the Rockets’ offense rebounds, Knox said. The girls stuck to that promise, limiting their opponents to only one shot off an offensive rebound.
Guard and team captain Nicole Fleck also contributed to the scoring massacre with 10 points, including two three-pointers.
With an 8-0 record, the Vikings are already looking toward the future and preparing for a long playoff run.
“As a team, we definitely have big goals this year,” Knox said. “We are all working hard every day, so we can be successful in the playoffs.”
The girls look for their ninth win when they travel to face the 6-3 Blair Blazers next Friday.
