The girls basketball team dominated their cross-town rival, the B-CC Barons 62-33 Thursday night, improving their undefeated record to 7-0 this season.
The first quarter was back and forth, resulting in a slim 12-9 lead for the Vikings. Despite the Barons committing several turnovers in those first eight minutes, they still managed to keep the game close.
The second quarter brought a new sense of energy to the game, with Vikings guard Abby Meyers scoring 11 of her game-high 26 points to bring the visiting Vikings to a commanding 28-15 lead at the half.
“We knew going into the game that they are a very hard working team,” guard Hannah Niles said. “As the game went on we improved and matched their energy and took away their biggest threats.”
The Vikings kept their intensity up throughout the second half, outscoring the Barons 34-18 and looking physically dominant down the stretch.
After starting forward Marie Hatch exited in the first half with a fractured knuckle, Niles came off the bench to quickly score 11 points. Forward Betsy Knox added 8 points and forward Livy Meyers, who was called up from JV to replace two injured players, scored 6 points.
“This game was a great team win for us,” Niles said. “Everybody contributed in some way and it was an overall team effort.”
Although the game was a sweet victory over a fierce rival, the Vikings know that aspects of their game are still a work in progress.
“We are going to continue to improve on the defensive end because we feel that it’s an area that can really push us to the next level,” Niles said.
The girls look to remain undefeated when they travel to face the 4-5 Richard Montgomery Rockets Friday night.
