Boys soccer beats Kennedy 4-1 in first round of playoffs

Boys soccer had a strong opening to the postseason, defeating Kennedy 4-1 at home Friday. The Vike’s strong offense was showcased by forward Davey Mason who scored a hat-trick.

The first half was uneventful with both teams failing to score. Although the Viking’s defense looked solid, the offense was not playing up to the high standard they had set for themselves during the regular season.

The Vikes found the net first, with Mason scoring off of a free kick. Soon following, Kennedy created a breakaway in transition with goalie, captain Ian Atkinson, as the lone defender.

Atkinson had no choice but to take out the legs of the Kennedy forward to prevent the goal, and recieved a red card. Back-up goalie Jessie Markowitz couldn’t save the Vikes, and Kennedy scored off of the penalty kick. Atkinson will be suspended for one game, a tough loss for the Vikings in the net.

Whitman was quick to break the tie, however, with Mason scoring again, soon followed by midfielder, captain Jeff Rosenberg, who also registered a goal.

Mason, who had an incredible night, scored the final goal, leaving the final score at 4-1.

Rosenberg is confident that the team is focused enough to deepen their playoff run starting with a win Tuesday against B-CC.

“We’re just looking for a win. It doesn’t matter whether it’s our best game or our worst game of the season,” he said. “It’s all about winning and advancing.”
