The boys soccer team came away with a clutch 3-2 win at Churchill Tuesday. The game not only crowned Whitman as the 4A South division champion, but also secured the team a first round bye in the playoffs.
Whitman jumped out to a quick lead in the first half when forward Andreas Djurhuus found the back of the net. Strong defense on both sides was the story for the remainder of the first half with the score being 1-0 at halftime.
Churchill bounced back early in the second tying the game at 1-1, until the Vikings’ leading scorer, forward Davey Mason, scored giving the Vikes the lead again.
Whitman couldn’t hold the lead for long, and Churchill quickly tied the game back at 2-2. The game then fell back into a defensive battle despite the Vikes’ ability to dominate possession.
The tie finally broke with 50 seconds remaining when forward Aaron Tanenbaum scored, securing the win for Whitman.
The win against a major rival gives the Vikings a lot of momentum moving forward this season.
“It gives us the confidence we need to win going into the playoffs,” defenseman Chris Whittle said.
Whitman will travel to New Jersey this Saturday for the final game of their regular season against St. Benedicts.
