The AMVETS recognized Whitman teacher Joe Mornini for his Team River Runner program with one of their prestigious silver helmet awards on Mar. 20.
The award is given every year by the American Veterans Association to those who exemplify leadership and excellence in eight categories ranging from peace to rehabilitation.
Mornini’s program earned him the rehabilitation award. While Mornini said he appreciates the accolades he receives as the director of the program, he feels overwhelmed by the award.
“It’s not why I started Team River Runner,” he said. “This award is really dedicated to all of the people who work with Team River Runner: the volunteers and the vets themselves.”
Mornini founded Team River Runner in the summer of 2004, and the organization now features 25 chapters all over the country.
The program is a non-profit organization that offers kayaking and paddle sports for wounded warriors and their families. Mornini noted that the experience helps relieve many veteran’s burdens.
“I’ve heard many comments about how it’s life changing,” Mornini said. “It is about making wounded warriors feel enabled, and not disabled.”
Washingtonian Magazine also recognized Mornini as Washingtonian of the year in 2006 for the program.
