Juniors start dress collection drive

When spring rolls around, girls across the country search high and low for floor-length gowns and schedule professional hair and makeup appointments, all in preparation for one of the most anticipated and hyped nights of senior year — prom.

Manos Unidas members Hannah Guiffre and Julia Fraser were inspired by the amount of wealth and privilege found in Bethesda and decided to start a prom dress drive through the club to collect gowns for girls who can’t afford their own.

“A lot of us have multiple dresses, some of which we don’t wear,” Fraser, a junior, said. “Donating them allows other girls to better use and appreciate them.”

The dresses will be delivered to the Langley Park Center, a community center that assists girls who attend schools in both Montgomery and Prince George’s county. Most of the girls attend school on scholarships, so they don’t usually have enough money to buy dresses, Giuffre, also a junior, said.

“I was watching the Halo awards, and this girl put on a fashion show for girls who could not afford their own fancy clothes,” Giuffre said. “There are some people around here who could probably do the same thing, but instead of putting on a fashion show, I figured we could donate actual dresses.”

The first day of collection took place outside the Secret Garden fashion show, and the girls received 16 dresses. The girls hope to reach a total of 50 dresses, and collection will continue until May 15 in room A-328.

Fraser hopes they will be used for anything from prom to Sweet 16’s to quinceañeras, she said.

“For my senior year, the one thing I look forward to is prom, because it’s the last big moment before you graduate and go to college,” Giuffre said. “Having a nice dress and feeling fancy makes a huge difference.”
