The 5-1 boys tennis team was served its first loss of the season April 17, 6-1, when it squared off against the undefeated Wootton Patriots at home.
The only Whitman player to collect a win was singles player Nathaniel Sherman, as a number of his teammates faced more than they could handle in a tough day for the Vikes.
No doubles duos were able to win their matches, however, there were several close-fought matches involving sophomores Matt Yang and Tyler Jacobson, as well as juniors David Bloch and Jack Storey, who lost 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 7-5, respectively.
The Vikes went into the match with the knowledge that Wootton is a solid team, but expected more from themselves.
“No one was necessarily expecting to win,” Bloch said. “But the loss was nonetheless a disappointment.”
The team will next take to the courts April 19 at home as they look to finish what they started one week earlier against the Blair Blazers in a match that was postponed due to inclement weather.
