Varsity ice hockey defeated the Wootton Patriots 3-2 in overtime, Feb 17, moving on to the state semifinal game.
Both teams started the game slow and failed to score in the first period. However, the Vikes struck early in the second with a goal only one minute in. Nicholas Domingos got a rebound off of a deflected shot and finished the play with a close range shot.
Only one minute later, Seth Butler added another goal for the Vikes with a beautiful shot to the upper half of the net. But, Wootton responded with a breakaway goal two minutes later.
The Vikings went into the third period up 2-1, but Wootton added another goal with a long distance slapshot that found the upper corner of the goal. The Vikes had numerous chances down the stretch but could not convert on any opportunities.
The teams continued to battle hard in the overtime period, and each team had several close scoring chances.
With three minutes left in overtime, the Vikings put together an offensive push that would end the game. The Vikes took a shot from just outside the blue line and the puck was deflected falling just outside of the mouth of the goal. Forward Aidan Neustadtl swept in and put the puck in the net to secure the win.
The Vikings will play the West Region champion, who has yet to be determined, on Saturday Feb 20.
