Girls’ swimming captures Division I title

On Feb. 13, the Viking swim team competed in the Montgomery County Division I meet.  The girls’ team took first place, beating last year’s Metros champions Churchill by over 100 points.  The boys’ team took fourth, only 23 points behind the Walter Johnson powerhouse who came in third.

The girls 200 medley relay consisting of Victoria Kuhn, Reia Tong, Danielle Schulkin and Lauren Poore set the tone of the meet by resetting their own MCPS record with an automatic All America time of 1:48.29.  Schulkin later won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.58, marking the fourth time she has captured the title in her high school career.  Schulkin also went on to finish first in the 100 backstroke with the only sub-one minute time in the event.

The Vikings continued to dominate in the 200 individual medley as freshmen Charlotte Meyer and Audrey Gould placed first and second respectively.  Sophomore Lauren Levy added to the Vikings’ margin by placing fourth in the event.  Once again, the girls took three of the first four spots in the 50 freestyle.  Kuhn was first in 24.33, followed by Tong in 25.11 while Katie Mahaffie placed fourth in 25.51.

Tong carried the momentum from the 50 freestyle into the 100 freestyle with a first place finish in 54.14.  Poore was close behind Tong in 54.18, good enough for second place while senior Jenna Mahaffie came in fourth in 55.73.  The Vikings went on to win the 200 freestyle relay as well as the 400 freestyle relay.

The boys’ team also had success with strong showings by Captain Serge Gould and senior Jackson Janezich.  Gould started off with a win in the 200 individual medley with a time 1:54.73, lowering his seed time by over a second.  Gould continued his success into the 100 breaststroke, placing first by out touching Walter Johnson’s Andrew Tollefson.  Janezich placed third in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle with times of 1:47.53 and 4:56.76 respectively.

The boys placed third in both the 200 individual medley relay which consisted of Gould, Adam Wise, Patrick Scordato and Adam Bloom and the 400 freestyle relay of Janezich, Wise, Scordato and Gould.

The Vikings are looking forward to the county championships which will begin on Thursday with the 500 freestyle event, followed by diving on Friday and the remainder of the swimming events on Saturday.
