The girls soccer team conquered the 5-5 Walter Johnson Wildcats Oct. 10 1-0 at home with a double-overtime goal to decide the game in favor of the now 8-2 Vikes.

The Vikes took many shots to keep the opposing goalkeeper busy but she was tenacious in defending the Wildcats’ goal. The team was quick to pass the ball and use the entire field to its advantage.

“We really wanted to focus on our passing and moving the ball around and being patient and playing our game,” forward Emma Anderson said. “We just lost a game to Churchill at home and we wanted to stay confident and play well together.”

Both teams were unsuccessful to score in either half, and the first overtime was scoreless as well. The Vikes stayed persistent on offense, forcing the Wildcat keeper to make make several more crucial saves. The Vikes’ defense was characteristically strong as well, keeping the ball on the Wildcats’ half for the majority of the game.

“[The defense is] always one of our strongest parts of the team,” Anderson said. “Lottie is a good leader and did a really good job communicating.”

About two minutes into the second 10-minute period of overtime, forward Anna Gurney finished a shot that spun just over the fingers of the keeper and rolled into the net to conclude the game in favor of the Vikes.

“Playing on our home field really motivates us,” Anderson said. “We set a goal in the beginning of the season to always win at home, so that’s always a huge factor.”

The Vikes look forward to their next match-up Oct. 17 against 4-time defending state champion B-CC, which currently has a 7-1 record.
