Stairs condemned near Whittier Woods and loading dock

Many students might have been confused by the PA announcement earlier this week, when principal Alan Goodwin announced the stairs outside Whittier Woods by the loading dock and portions of the playground had been condemned.

The stairs outside Whittier Woods down to the loading dock are condemned, as announced this week. Students cannot access the stairs. Photo by Nellie Vinograd.

Building Services had observed that sand and dirt were eroding the structure over time, making it possibly unsafe for use, Goodwin said. MCPS maintenance officials inspected the area and decided to condemn it until a structural engineer can examine it more closely.

In the meantime, the area has been taped off, and students cannot exit Whittier Woods through the side entrance by the stairs.

“We’re just not having students walk on it for their safety,” Goodwin said.
