Outspoken Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is in hot water again for saying something inappropriate. Guillen was quoted telling Time Magazine that he loved Fidel Castro, saying he respects Castro because Castro has survived so many attempts on his life.
No matter how Guillen tries to frame his comment, it’s the worst thing he could have said as the new manager of the Miami Marlins.
South Beach has a huge Cuban immigrant population who have witnessed or experienced firsthand the horror Castro put his people through. The reason why Guillen was brought to Miami in the first place was to appeal to the Hispanic population in Florida, and now Guillen has alienated much of this population. A local Cuban advocacy group has even pledged to boycott all Marlin games until Guillen is fired.
The only punishment Guillen has received is a five game suspension, which is barely a slap on the hand. I believe he has gone too far and what he said was too inappropriate to be forgiven.
